Govt to build 1,500 more schools: Nahid

The government will build 1,500 schools in rural areas, said Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid yesterday. It has initiated a project to enhance the quality of higher education, he said. Nahid told a meeting styled 'Implementation of the national education policy: Challenges and way forward' organised by Campaign for Popular Education (CAMPE) in the city's Cirdap auditorium. About the quality of private universities, Nahid said necessary steps will be taken against those universities which provide substandard education or fail to meet the government-set criteria. Like previous year, the government will supply text books to all students within the first week of January next year, he said. Principal Kazi Faruk Ahmed placed a 10-point recommendation for the implementation of the education policy including allocation of Tk 100 crore, establishing a permanent national education commission and formulation of comprehensive education policy. Palli Karma Sahayak Foundation Chairman Dr Qazi Kholiquzzaman Ahmad also spoke while CAMPE Executive Director Rasheda K Choudhury chaired the event.
