A mobile court yesterday sentenced a person to two years imprisonment in the city on charges of cheating five women by marrying them and attempting to marry 14 others. The mobile court gave the verdict after Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) personnel arrested Hafizur Rahman Zahid, 40, of Barguna district from a house in the city's West Rajabazar on Wednesday. Deputy Director of Rab-2 Saiful Karim yesterday at a press conference at the Rab office said Zahid used to introduce himself as a senior assistant secretary of the home ministry and mentioned his name as Dr Shariful Islam. Executive Magistrate Anwar Pasha said Zahid had already married five women and made contact with 15 other girls to marry them. He used to collect money from the victims' family members offering them jobs and other facilities. Rab officials also said they seized a hired car that he had been using for his movement with a sticker of the home ministry on the vehicle. Three among Zahid's five wives, were also present at the press conference. A woman, who claimed to be the first wife of Zahid but declined to disclose her name and show her face, told reporters that she and her daughter came to know her husband's wrongdoing five years back but they couldn't stop him. “Zahid used to visit his first wife and children once every two or three months,” the woman said. One Mahmudur Rahman Khan of Uttara, who claimed to be a brother of one of the cheated girls, alleged that Zahid had taken Tk 5 lakh from him for managing a scholarship for him and Tk 1 lakh from his friend for a job.
