78 ACC cases resulted in conviction this year

From 180 corruption cases, filed by Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) and disposed of this year, only 78 resulted in convictions while the accused in the remaining cases were released, revealed an ACC statistics yesterday. ACC Director General (Legal) Kamrul Hossain Molla revealed this at a monthly press briefing at ACC headquarters in the city. Trial of 1,257 cases is going on at different judge's courts across the country while 304 more were stayed by the High Court (HC). Of the total, 457 cases are running in Dhaka. Among cases filed when ACC was formerly known as Bureau of Anti-Corruption (BAC), 420 were disposed of this year with convictions of the accused in 206 cases while those in the remaining cases were acquitted. Moreover, 923 cases from that period are still continuing and 403 more were stayed by the HC. Meanwhile, ACC filed 24 more cases last month accusing 82 people, including 48 government employees. BAC converted to ACC in 2004 over allegations that the former failed to uphold its duties.
