10 killed, 71 hurt in road crashes
Ten people were killed and 71 others injured in separate road accidents in Chittagong, Sylhet, Netrakona, Thakurgaon and Benapole yesterday.
Staff correspondent from Chittagong reports: Two people were killed and at least six others injured when a Banshkhali bound bus from the port city plunged into a roadside ditch near Chaturi Chowmohoni crossing in Anwara upazila around 9:30am yesterday, said Md Shahjahan, officer-in-charge of Anwara Police Station.
The deceased were identified as Rokeya, 50, and Abdur Rahim, 40.
The injured were taken to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH).
In another accident, a worker Md Hasan, 28, was killed as a speeding bus knocked him near National Cotton Mills in Sitakunda upazila around 11:40am, police said.
In one more accident, at least 20 people were injured in a bus-truck collision on Dhaka-Chittagong Highway at Banshbaria in the upazila early morning, said Sergeant Ariful Islam of highway police camp at Kumira.
Eight of the injured were admitted to the CMCH.
Staff correspondent from Sylhet says: A CNG-run auto-rickshaw fell into a canal beside Dhaka-Sylhet Highway at Ratanpur in Madhabpur upazila in Habiganj after being hit by a Sylhet bound bus around 1:30pm, leaving Zonaki, 25, wife of Mahbubul Alam and Asia Begum, 30, wife of Asir Uddin dead and three others injured.
Highway police said the injured including the auto-rickshaw driver were taken to Madhabpur Upazila Health Complex.
Soon after the accident, local people put barricade on the road which left an-hour-long tailback in the area.
Our Netrakona correspondent reports: One person was killed and 40 others were injured when a bus fell into a ditch beside Netrakona-Madan road at Jahangirpur in Madan upazila yesterday around 12:30pm, said police.
The dead was identified as Rina Akther, 26, wife of Abdul Hakim of village Joypasha in the upazila.
Seriously injured Sakina Khatun, Happy Akther, Rashada Khatun, Abdul Jabber and Marzina Begum were sent to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital while the others to local health complex.
In Thakurgaon, three motorcyclists were killed when a tractor hit the bike on Pirganj-Jaborhat road at Purbahazipara village in Pirganj upazila yesterday afternoon.
The victims are Juwel, 38, Azad, 32, and Saidur Rahman, 43.
In another road accident, two bicyclists Shebu and Mizanur Rahman were injured when a tractor hit the cycle on Thakurgaon-Ruhia road in Paltan area in sadar upazila the same day around 12:00 noon.
The injured were undergoing treatment at Thakurgaon Sadar Hospital.
Aggrieved people set fire to the tractor.
Our Benapole correspondent says: A man was killed when a motorbike hit him from behind on Bejpara road in Jessore town yesterday morning.
The deceased was identified as Soroj Kumer Dey, 65, son of Gol Kumer Hori of Bejpara area in the town.
