Effective implementation a must for democracy

Effective implementation of the Right to Information (RTI) act can play a vital role in establishing people's government and true democracy in South Asia, said speakers at a workshop yesterday. The act is an effective way to provide information to the masses, which is essential for strengthening democracy, they said. The workshop, “Implementation of RTI Act: Role of NGOs and CSOs”, was held at Dhaka University. Manusher Jonno Foundation, Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB), RTI Forum and Reality of Aid Asia Pacific jointly organised the workshop to mark the beginning of South Asia Social Forum 2011. Addressing the workshop as the chief guest, noted Indian journalist and intellectual Kuldip Nayar described the necessity of formulating a similar act specifically designed to help provide information on countries of the South Asian region. TIB Executive Director Dr Iftekharuzzaman urged the authorities concerned to take necessary steps for a proper implementation of the RTI act. Shaheen Anam, executive director of Manusher Jonno Foundation, moderated the workshop, where Dr Jagadanada, information commissioner of Orissa, India, and Information Commissioner Prof Dr Sadeka Halim also spoke.
