Sufia Kamal's anniversary of death today

Today is the 12th death anniversary of poet Sufia Kamal, one of the pioneers in establishing women's rights. On the occasion, Shamajik Protirodh Committee will hold a discussion and cultural programme at Central Shaheed Minar premises at 3:30pm today. Born in Shaistabad of Barisal in 1911, the poet dedicated her life to fighting for the rights of women and the poor and against religious extremism. Her first poem was published in Saugat in 1926. Her works, translated into English and Russian, reflected the struggle to uphold Bangla language and culture and to resist the machinations of the Pakistani rulers. During the War of Liberation, the poet came to the aid of the freedom fighters and afterwards she worked with Ekatturer Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee to bring the war criminals to justice. She also headed the largest women's organisation in the country, Bangladesh Mahila Parishad, for many years. Sufia Kamal won numerous national and international awards, including Ekushey Padak, Bangla Academy Award and Lenin Prize.
