Inu urges govt not to betray the indigenous

Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) President Hasanul Haque Inu yesterday asked the government to fulfill the promises made to the indigenous people during the last national election and not to betray the community. “Do not betray because there is no place for betrayers. Fulfill the promise you (government) made to indigenous people earlier,” said the lawmaker. Inu was addressing a seminar titled “Human Rights and Dignity of Indigenous Peoples in South Asia: Bangladesh Context” organised by Kapaeeng Foundation and Jatiya Adivasi Parishad at the auditorium of Institute of Business Administration in Dhaka University. Speaking at the discussion, National Human Rights Commission Chairman Prof Mizanur Rahman called upon indigenous people to encourage the masses from the mainstream to join and strengthen their movement. Information and Publicity Secretary of Parbatya Chattagram Jana Sanghati Samity Mangal Kumar Chakma presented a keynote paper. In his paper, Mangal said Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) Regional Council and Hill District Councils, enacted as per the CHT Peace Accord, should be included in the first part of the constitution. Chakma Circle Chief Barrister Raja Devasish Roy and Manusher Jonno Foundation Director Shamim Imam addressed the programme, moderated by Bangladesh Indigenous Peoples Forum General Secretary Sanjeeb Drong and presided over by Kapaeeng Foundation Chairperson Rabindranath Soren.
