Tipaimukh Dam
Foreign policy blamed
As a reaction to India's initiative to construct the Tipaimukh dam, different social and rights bodies at home criticised Bangladesh's foreign policy as being too kowtowing to India.
Expressing concern, they urged the government to raise the issue at the United Nations and the International Court of Justice.
India is moving ahead with plans to build the controversial dam on the river Barak in its northeastern Manipur state, ignoring international laws and conventions.
Citizen Rights Movement, in a press release, said such an act by India poses a threat to the ecosystem and livelihood of the haor people in Bangladesh and yet the government remains mum in this regard.
Another rights body, Sammilita Nari Samaj, in its press release said, due to water aggression by India, most of the rivers in the northern and north-eastern parts of the country are dying out.
The foreign ministry has failed to play its due role by giving scope to India to build the dam, said the rights bodies.
Bangladesh National Awami Party and Ganotantrik Bam Morcha also condemned India's Tipaimukh dam initiative.
