Pry terminal exams begin today

The primary terminal examinations 2011 for class V students of general and madrasa education begin today with some 26.37 lakh examinees. The examination, considered the largest public examination in the country, will start at 11:00am in 6,168 centres across the country and another eight centres overseas. Examinations of six subjects will be held in six days with examinees of both the categories taking mathematics on the first day. The examinations end on November 30. A total of 23,16,685 general and 3,20,991 madrasa students have registered to sit for the exams. As in the previous year, the number of female examinees is higher than male ones this year. In both the general and madrasa students, around 53 percent examinees are girls and 46 percent are boys. Some 2.38 lakh students who either flunked or remained absent in the 2010 exams will be appearing at this year's terminal examinations, said Primary and Mass Education Minister Afsarul Ameen in a press briefing at the ministry yesterday. Of the total examinees, he said, 4,003 are physically challenged, 632 appear at the overseas centres, and 46,665 are dropped out from Reaching Out of School Children (ROSC) Project. The minister said the physically challenged students will get an additional 15 minutes in the examinations. The overseas centres are in Riyadh, Jeddah, Doha, Abu Dhabi, Ras Al Khaimah, Tripoli, Bahrain, and Canberra. The students must qualify the terminal examinations to enrol in class VI. On the basis of the results, scholarships will be equally distributed to male and female students under talent-pool and general categories. The minister said, “We have increased the number of scholarships to 55,000 from 50,000. The government has a plan to double the number of scholarships".
