Speakers yesterday demanded exemplary punishment and arrest of Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) President and lawmaker Col (retd) Oli Ahmed for his derogatory comment about local Awami League lawmaker Begum Cheman Ara Tayeb. They made the demand in a human chain programme organised by Fight for Women's Rights (FWR) in front of Chittagong Press Club in the city. FWR President Advocate Rehana Begum Ranu, also a councillor of Chittagong City Corporation (CCC), said, when an elderly person like Oli passes such comments on a female lawmaker, the state should impose tough punishment on him. "If he (Oli) is left unpunished, the society will get the wrong message and the youngsters may be derailed,” she added. Dr Sirajul Islam, journalist Riaz Haider, women leader Debi Chowdhury, CCC councillor Gias Uddin, among others, were present. Mentionable, a Chittagong court on Sunday summoned Oli to appear before it within seven days in connection with a case filed against him for his derogatory comment about the prime minister and the lawmaker. A local businessman, Aftab Mahmud Shimul, filed the case. While addressing a conference in Chandanaish upazila on November 18, Oli in his speech said, “Problems of thousands of young people in Chandanaish cannot be solved by providing one female lawmaker. Many more beautiful ladies have to be from Tungipara to Chandanaish for the young people's welfare.” The comment was published in a local Bangla daily the next day.
