BNP leader Salauddin Quader Chowdhury who has been charged with war crimes and crimes against humanity during the 1971 Liberation War has engaged a group of lawyers to defend him before the International Crimes Tribunal.
The group includes BNP leaders Barrister Moudud Ahmed, Barrister Rafiqul Islam Mia, Supreme Court Bar Association President Khandker Mahbub Hossain, Jamaat-e Islami leader Barrister Abdur Razzaq and Barrister Fakhrul Islam.
Deputy Registrar Mesbahuddin Ahmed of the tribunal told The Daily Star that the detained BNP leader has officially informed the tribunal about engaging lawyers yesterday afternoon.
However, he could not name all the lawyers engaged by the accused.
Salauddin is set to be produced before the tribunal in the morning today in connection with charges of crimes against humanity.
SCBA President Khandker Mahbub Hossain yesterday said he along with other senior lawyers will go to the tribunal to consult their client to determine a strategy to defend him.
On November 17, the tribunal took into cognisance the war crimes charges against Salauddin and fixed November 24 (today) to pass a further directive.
Salauddin, who was detained on December 15 last year, was shown arrested in connection with war crimes allegations on December 20 the same year.
The defendant used to place his arguments all by himself before the tribunal.
On November 14, prosecutors submitted to the court the formal charges against Salauddin, an opposition lawmaker, citing his involvement in 24 incidents of crime against humanity during the Liberation War in 1971.
