Home Minister Sahara Khatun yesterday accused the opposition leader of siding with war criminals and trying to disrupt the war crimes trial through her party's actions. At a meeting in Jamalpur in the afternoon Sahara said, “Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) is trying to foil the war crime trial in the name of a road march throughout the country. Khaleda Zia has now taken the side of those alleged to have committed war crimes.” She was a special guest at the meeting on law and order held at the Jamalpur Deputy Commissioner's office. The home minister urged BNP leaders to refrain from protecting those accused of killings, rape and other atrocious crimes during the liberation war. If public opinion for this keeps pouring in, no one can stop the trial.” Speaking about scarcity of police vans in police stations across the country, the home minister said that the BNP-Jamat alliance government has not purchased a single vehicle for the police department during their tenure. “We are now stuck with red tape but have already orderd for 214 police vans,” she said.
