Tipaimukh Issue
Sylhet BNP starts agitation
Sylhet district and city units of BNP yesterday started their weeklong agitation to protest against 'governments inaction' regarding Tipaimukh dam project.
They started with a mass rally held at the city's Court Point area with former lawmaker and District Vice-president Dilder Hosain Selim at the chair.
Later they took out a procession in the city.
Speakers at the rally said, construction of Tipaimukh dam would cause desertification in Sylhet and adjoining districts. The Surma, Kushiyara and other rivers in the region would dry up during winter while during monsoon flooding would be a regular phenomenon.
The government failed to deal with the issue with Indian government due to bad foreign policy, they said.
Former lawmaker and District President M Ilays Ali, General Secretary MA Gaffar and city BNP President MA Haque and Vice-President Nasim Hossain also spoke among others.
The weeklong agitation was announced on November 22.
The programmes of the agitation include procession and rally at upazila level on 26 November, procession by the jatiyatabadi Shechhasebak Dal (JCD) at the city on 27 November, rally and procession by the JCD on 28 November, rally and procession by the district and city BNP and other front organizations on 30 November and hartal in the district and upazilas on December 1.
