Girl Murder
Dalit leaders demand punishment
Dalit community leaders yesterday demanded immediate arrest and exemplary punishment to the youths who allegedly violated and killed a 14-year-old girl at Bholabo in Rupganj upazila of Narayanganj.
They also warned of further movement if necessary steps were not taken to bring the culprits to book within a week.
They made the demand at a press conference organised by Bangladesh Dalit Parishid (BDP) and Parittran, a NGO, at Jatiya Press Club in the city in association with Manusher Jonno Foundation.
BDP Coordinator Bikash Das, reading out the keynote paper, alleged that one Dalim, 22, son of Siraj Kompany of Bholabo, used to stalk Ruma Rani Das.
On October 1, Dalim along with his associates violated and strangled Ruma and hanged her body from the ceiling to establish it as a suicide, he said.
The victim's father Purna Chandra Das filed a case with Rupganj Police Station on October 3 against Dalim, Rafiqul Islam, and Shamim Miah of the same locality.
Police are yet to arrest the accused while their family members are threatening Ruma's family to withdraw the case, her father alleged.
Ruma's mother Malati Rani demanded exemplary punishment of the culprits.
Shobha Das, director of programme of Minority Rights Group International, and Ashok Das, general secretary of BDP, also spoke among others.
