Dr Milon Day today

Dr Milon Day will be observed in the country today, marking the 21st death anniversary of Shaheed Dr Shamsul Alam Khan Milon. The armed cadres of the then autocratic ruler HM Ershad killed Dr Milon, former joint secretary of Bangladesh Medical Association, near the Teachers Students Centre (TSC) on Dhaka University campus on this day in 1990 in a bid to foil the upcoming mass upsurge. Different organisations have organised programmes in observance of the day. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in a message paid rich tributes to the memory of Dr Milon. She said Dr Milon was a proud soldier in the movement to restore democracy. His death facilitated the movement and expedited the fall of autocratic regime. Now the people of Bangladesh are enjoying the fruit of the sacrifice, she added. Leader of the Opposition and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia in a massage said Dr Milon's sacrifice would be remembered in the heart of those people who always fight against autocracy for democracy. On the occasion, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) will organise a discussion at Shaheed Col Taher auditorium of the city's Bangabandhu Avenue in the afternoon.
