Road crashes kill 7, injure 64

Seven people, including two border guards, were killed and 64 others injured in separate road accidents in Rangpur, Jessore, Brahmanbaria, Dinajpur and Narail early Friday and yesterday. A correspondent from Rangpur reports: Two members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) identified as Havilder Abdur Rouf, 45, and Havilder Abul Kalam, 43, were left dead on the spot and six others injured as a pick-up van plunged into a roadside ditch in Pirganj upazila around 8:30am yesterday, said Raushon Mostafa, officer-in-charge of Pirganj Police Station. Four of the injured were taken to Rangpur Combined Military Hospital while the rest two to Rangpur Medical College Hospital. Our Benapole correspondent adds: Two workers Yusuf Alom, 35, son of Billal Hossain, and Iqbal Dhali, 37, son of Iman Dhali, were killed and five others injured when a truck hit a three-wheeler vehicle on Benapole-Jessore Highway at Beniali in Jhikorgachha upazila in Jessore yesterday morning. In another accident, Ishaque Ali, 50, son of Hazrat Ali, was seriously injured when a pick-up van hit him while crossing Benapole-Jessore road at Sarsa Bazar in Jessore around 8:00am yesterday. He succumbed to his injuries on the way to Jessore Sadar Hospital. Yet another accident, a bus hit Ohab Boksi, 52, of Abhaynagar upazila, while he was crossing Jessore-Khulna Highway at Chengutia Bazar in Jessore, killing him on the spot around 6:00am yesterday. Our Brahmanbaria correspondent reports: Md Haroon Mia, 45, of Akhaura upazila, was killed as a three-wheeler passenger vehicle knocked him from behind on Akhaura-Karampur road at Ramdhangar in Akhaura upazila on Friday night. In Dinajpur, at least 38 people including two women were injured as a bus skidded off the road on Phulbari-Rangpur Highway in Barapukuria area around 8.30am yesterday morning, said police. Of the injured, 14 people were admitted to Dinajpur Medical College Hospital and four to Phulbari Health Complex police said. In Narail, at least 15 people were seriously injured when a passenger bus fell into a ditch beside Narail-Jessore Highway at Vangura Bazar yesterday. Locals sent the injured to Narail Sadar Hospital.
