Khaleda out to protect war criminals: Hasina

Unb, Dhaka
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has again accused her arch political rival, BNP chief Khaleda Zia of openly trying to protect the war criminals, who are being brought to trial after 40 years. “Despite the fact that it was a very difficult task we have started the trial and we must complete it,” she said while speaking to Awami League nomination seekers for the five seats reserved for women in parliament at Gono Bhaban yesterday. As many as 179 women candidates have sought the party nomination to contest five reserved seats. The number of reserved seats has been increased to 50 from 45 by amending the Constitution. The premier said Khaleda was out to protect the war criminals who had committed killing, rape, loot and arson during the War of Liberation. She said it was not a surprise that Khaleda has been doing it since her husband Gen Ziaur Rahman had rehabilitated the war criminals while she gave indulgence to her sons to smuggle money out of the country during her rule. “It's a shame for the nation that an FBI agent came here to stand as witness against her son for money laundering,” said Hasina. Hasina, also president of Awami League, said all nomination seekers are competent and they have significant contributions to the party as well as all democratic movements, particularly during the rule of the army-backed caretaker government. She urged them to work for strengthening the Awami League and its front organisations at the grassroots level.
