10 injured as Shibir men hurl brickbats at police
Some 10 people, including four policemen, were injured when police intercepted a procession of the Islami Chhatra Shibir activists in the city's Barutkhana area on Tuesday.
Police picked up two Shibir men from the spot in this connection.
Witnesses and police said Shibir men took out a procession demanding release of the Jamaat leaders facing war crimes trial.
As the procession reached Barutkhana, police intercepted them.
Nazmul Hasan, assistant commissioner of Sylhet Metropolitan Police, said the procession was taken out from Bandarbazar area without prior permission.
When intercepted, the unruly agitators pelted brickbats injuring policemen and pedestrians, he said.
At one stage, police had to fire 10 rounds of blank shots and lob 15 tear shells to disperse the activist, he added.
