Studies on Sundarbans
WB providing assistance
The World Bank is providing technical assistance and grants for various studies to help the government develop a conservation and sustainable development programme for the Sundarbans, the world's largest mangrove forest.
The studies, based on both primary and secondary data, will address the main challenges like poverty reduction, climate change adaptation, and biodiversity conservation in the forest, said a press release on Thursday.
The studies are grouped into four categories; i) socio-economic development, including a household survey; ii) bio-diversity conservation and environmental management; iii) disaster risk management; and iv) geomorphology and sea-level rise.
The studies are underway and expected to be completed by June 2012.
Meanwhile, a household survey has been completed and its summary statistics would be finalised by December 2011.
