Int'l Anti-Corruption Day
Vow to fight graft
The International Anti-Corruption Day was observed throughout the country through programmes organised by Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) and its countrywide corruption prevention committees yesterday to raise awareness on the effects and prevention of corruption.
Programmes including rallies and cultural functions were held to encourage the masses to stand against corruption and free the society of the menace and ensure good governance.
Our correspondent from Rangpur reports: Speakers at a discussion stated that the present government is yet to implement its pledge to sign the United Nations Convention against Corruption.
The convention puts emphasis on preventing corruption, its criminalisation, international cooperation on the issue and asset recovery.
Lack of political goodwill is also hampering anti-corruption institutions from playing out their due roles though they have been put in place. Firm political commitment is a prerequisite for curbing corruption, they said.
The discussion was organised by TIB Rangpur unit, Shacheton Nagorik Committee, Youth Engagement Support, Durnity Protirodh Committee at the district press club square.
Our correspondent from Gaibandha reports: Speakers at a discussion called upon everyone to be aware of and resist corruption and socially boycott corrupt people. They also pledged to build a corruption- and extortion-free society.
The discussion was organised by Gaibandha district unit of Durnity Protirodh Committee at North Bengal Engineering Institute hall room.
In another discussion organised by Shacheton Nagorik Committee at Zila Parishad Hall, speakers said corruption must be resisted to establish good governance and sustainable development in the country.
Our correspondent from Khagrachhari reports: TIB is working to create awareness among people about their rights and privileges to combat and resist corruption, said the district TIB Coordinator Jahangir Alam at a discussion.
The discussion was organised by TIB and Shacheton Nagorik Committee at the town hall auditorium. Street dramas and cultural programmes were also organised by the two organisations.
