Chittagong Awami League (AL) is going to organise a grand rally ahead of the visit of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on December 27 despite conflict among the leaders. Hasnia is supposed to come to the port city on December 27 to attend the occasion of passing out parade of Bangladesh Navy as the chief guest. The rally would be organised jointly by Chittagong city, Chittagong north and south district units at Laldighir Maidan, lawmaker and former minister Engineer Mosharraf Hossain said. Senior leaders are trying to unite two factions of the city unit to organise a successful rally, said Mosharraf, also president of Chittagong north district unit AL. Chittagong city unit of AL is now divided into two factions. One faction is led by ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury, AZM Nasir Uddin, Enamul Hoque Danu and lawmaker MA Latif while lawmaker Nurul Islam BSc, Primary and Mass Education Minister Afsarul Amin, Advocate Ibrahim Hossain Babul and MA Salam are leading another faction. Responding to the call of the senior leaders to be united, city unit President Mohiuddin Chowdhury has recently vowed to work together. “As a president of Chittagong city unit of AL it is my duty to keep the party united,” told Mohiuddin to The Daily Star. But rival leader Nurul Islam Bsc said he knew nothing about any initiative of Mohiuddin to be united. "Mohiuddin does not bother to talk to us,” he said, adding that the call to be united is mere an eyewash of Mohiuddin. “We will participate in the rally separately,” he added. Sources said the rift started when Nurul Islam got nomination in the 2008 national election despite Mohiuddin's opposition to the nomination. The conflict was intensified after the last city corporation election held in June 2010.
