10,000 acres more under Boro in Moulvibazar
To cover losses due to last year's flood in Moulvibazar district, the Agriculture Extension Department (AED) has taken steps to bring more 9,880 acres of land under Irri-Boro cultivation in the district this year.
AED has also taken initiative to cultivate hybrid varieties of paddy on 17 thousand 290 acres of land in the district whereas the area of hybrid variety cultivation was only 592 acres in last year, AED officials said.
The AED has distributed 100 irrigation pumps among the farmers and provided irrigation facility using the water of natural drains and canals.
The total area of Irri-Boro paddy cultivation in the district now stands at one lakh 17 thousand 78 acres and AED officials are expecting additional production of 25 thousand tonnes of Boro paddy in this season if the weather remains favourable.
Over 20,000 farmers of the district are getting the benefit of 'Agriculture Rehabilitation Programme' as Boro paddy will be cultivated on 6,669 acres of land under the programme. Seeds and fertilisers for one bigha of land have been distributed free of cost among each of those small and marginal farmers, who are the owner of less than 2.5 bigha of land.
According to the Moulvibazar AED office, Amon paddy of 32 thousand 981 acres of land in Moulvibazar Sadar, Rajnagar, Kamalganj, Kulaura, Baralekha and Juri upazilas of the district were damaged by two times flood in September last year.
Moulvibazar AED Deputy Director Laxmi Kanta Pandit said the district administration is helping them in motivating the farmers to produce Boro crops.
