Thousands vow to fight corruption in Pabna

Several thousand people including lawyers, doctors, social workers, journalists, teachers, students, NGO activists and cross-sections of people yesterday took part in the first anti-corruption rally in Pabna with a vow to build mass awareness to resist corruption. “The anti-graft rally conveys a message for the nation. We are to build awareness among the people to root out corruption from every levels of the country. Anti-corruption drive would be a social movement through such type of mass participation,” Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Secretary Mokhlesur Rahman said at the rally on the premises of Pabna Technical College. “It is better to avoid corruption than to beg pardon. We should pledge not to get involved in corruption and not tolerate corruption," the ACC secretary said. He expressed hope that the programme will help Pabna to be a role model of anti-corruption drives in the country. Gradually such anti-graft rallies will be held across the country, he said. Among others, ACC Director General Md Abu Taleb, Director in charge of Rajshahi division Maj Safiul Azam, Pabna Deputy Commissioner Md Golam Moula and Pabna Superintendent of Police AFM Masum Rabbani were present at the rally. Earlier at about 12:00pm, a procession led by the ACC secretary started from Pabna Edward College premises. After parading the main street in Pabna town 'Abdul Hamid Road' the participants assembled on the premises of Pabna Technical College. ACC Chairman Hasan Mashhud Chowdhuri was scheduled to inaugurate the anti-graft rally but later the schedule was changed due to unavoidable circumstances. Several students, including a few school going ones, who came to the anti-graft rally, also expressed their opinion against corruption. “I know corruption is a bad thing. I do not like corruption. We will build a corruption-free nation,” said Razia Khatun, a class six student of Adarsha Girls High School. The anti-corruption rally in Pabna will obviously expedite anti-graft movement in the area, Prof AR Samsul Islam told this correspondent after the rally.
