Policeman to lose job for arrest in false case
IGP tells Mymensingh meeting
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Noor Muhammad yesterday said a policeman 'must' loose his job if a person is arrested in a false case.
“We should think whether we are delivering the services committed to the people or taking services from them for our own interest”, he said while exchanging views with civil society members at Zila Parishad auditorium.
Policemen must change their mindset. They will have to prove themselves as friends of people, the IGP added.
“There is no alternative to making police force a service oriented institution. You (policemen) have to realise this because changes are taking place all around”, he said.
“When people are in danger, they go to police for help but police do not respond properly. Such a negative image should be removed”.
The IGP threw a question to the audience whether any body had any specific complaint against any policemen. There was no response.
Thirty-seven years have passed after independence but the gap between police and people is yet to be bridged, he said. “We are trying for doing something good and there is no reason why we should not be hopeful”, he said.
Other speakers said politicians use police for their benefit. Police should come out of this culture to be friends of people, they said.
Mymensingh Police Superintendent Md Rafiqul Islam moderated the meeting. Among others, Dhaka Range DIG Amir Uddin and high police officials of district in greater Mymensingh attended the meeting.
Later the IGP held a meeting with members of community police from all 12 upazilas of Mymensingh district. Mymen-singh Deputy Commissioner Md. Shamsul Alam, Prof. Amir Ahmed Chowdhry Ratan, chief patron and president of district community policing and local public representatives attended the meeting.
