Zahir Raihan

Srabanto, Nephew of Zahir Raihan

It is 36 years since the Liberation and 35 years since Zahir Raihan has been missing. Yet we still do not know if Zahir Raihan is alive or if he has left us. He disappeared on January 30 1972 when the country was completely free. So what did really happen to him? Will we ever know for certain? A few years ago, the mayor pledged to erect a monument within a year at the Kayetuli Junction in honour of Zahir Raihan. The year 2008 has arrived but the construction is yet to begin. Why is this not being taken seriously? The problem has not been identified. I humbly request the government to erect this monument. Is it ever going to happen, and if not then why were people given hope? Is there nothing we can do for Zahir Raihan? Has anyone ever wondered about Zahir Raihan's family? No one has taken any steps regarding Zahir Raihan. A little remembrance on January 30 is not sufficient. In neighbouring India, Satyajit Ray's films are screened for a week before his death anniversary. Why is something like this not done for Zahir Raihan? As for the few discussion programmes held about him, no one deems it necessary to ask for his siblings' permission. Why is nothing done by the government on January 30 or August 3? What has he not done for the country? Why is he not being introduced to the younger generation? I want to conclude by asking again--- will there ever be a monument in honour of Zahir Raihan?
