Landmark judgement

Hafeejul Alam, A former civil servant,
Obviously, the landmark judgement given by the Hon'ble High Court on Emergency Power Rules (EPR) will go a long way to enhance the independent image of the Judiciary and defend the sanctity of the constitution of Bangladesh. On the other hand, it is very interesting that the prosecution preferred an appeal against this latest verdict within two hours of its pronouncement. It seems that the caretaker government, despite its many success stories, has still to go a long way to comprehend the relevant legal nuances. It's my personal opinion that it would be better if the government could accept the High Court judgement with a bit of far sight and try the corruption cases under the existing laws of the land. Let us not forget that the quality of leadership for true democracy cannot be prescribed by any quarter. It's the people who decide about their future and the things come to a shape through a long and arduous way of trial and error. That is why the maxim goes that "a country gets a government it deserves". It also follows that we will have to count upon our own people and our own leaders right or wrong, for we cannot import any better government. The coming days would be better if the pulse of the people could be felt in the right perspective.
