Talk shows
Almost every day, there are some talk shows on TV screens. We the common viewers are immensely benefited by the views, suggestions coming from the distinguished guests of various fields like politicians, journalists, teachers, intellectuals, retired high officials, retired judges, retired generals, big business magnets and writers who participate in the discussions. Thanks to the private TV channels who are arranging these talk shows for us. Although some of the participants speak from their own point of views, still we can get in-depth information on many things which we did not know and accordingly we can correct ourselves acquiring knowledge from their deliberations.
I appreciate the programmes and try to listen with patience. But sometimes I get confused when the participants suggest something which are not based on reality. Let me put an example of opinion on an ongoing problem the nation is facing and the government is in a dilemma with it. I quote "with other measures if we can increase the buying capacity of our people the present high prices will not be a problem". So far we have learnt from the economists, that the "buying power" of a nation is the result of growth of par-capita income of the general public as a whole and also relates to GDP (Gross National Products). This cannot be increased or decreased by any means very quickly. Suppose, the government suddenly increases the salaries of its employees, then what about the employees in the private sector? Will they overnight double the salaries of their employees? I doubt. Secondly, what about the increase of buying power of our farmers who constitute 80% of our population? Will the government pay them double the price of their products right now to enhance their buying capacity? What do the economists have to say about this? We want to know.
