29 ward commissioners''no confidence', memo for steps

Twenty-nine ward commissioners of Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) yesterday expressed 'no confidence' against SCC chief executive officer Kazi Abdul Noor for his alleged corruption and irregularities. They also demanded immediate steps against him to ensure a better working atmosphere at the SCC office. Noor, a BCS (Admin) cadre official, joined as chief executive officer (CEO) of SCC on deputation. He enjoys the status of a deputy secretary. The ward commissioners at an emergency meeting discussed the issue of the CEO's alleged corruption. SCC acting Mayor Azam Khan chaired the meeting. Noor was absent from the meeting 'guessing something wrong', meeting sources told this correspondent. He left for Dhaka without taking permission from the acting mayor, the sources claimed. After the meeting, the ward commissioners handed over a memorandum to the acting mayor demanding steps against Noor, acting mayor Azam Khan said. At the meeting, the commissioners alleged that the CEO's corruption brought the SCC administration to a near-collapse situation. Noor withdrew huge amounts of money as advance in the name of transport cost and took fuel for his official transport beyond entitlement. They also brought a number of other corruption charges and irregularities against the official, the sources said. Signatories to the memorandum were panel mayors advocate Rokshana Begum Shahnaj and Dinar Khan Hashu, Santanu Dautta Santanu, Md. Mujibur Rahman, Abdul Khalique, Selim Ahmed Rony, Md. Mokhlisur Rahman Kamran, Jamal Ahmed, Mohammad Shahjahan, Nazrul Islam Munim, Md. Azadur Rahman Azad, Saleha Kabir Shepy, Amena Begum Rumy, Kuhinur Yasmin Jharna, Saleh Ahmed Chowdhury, Abdul Quaiyum Jalali Ponki, Papiya Chowdhury, Shahan Ara Begum, Zebunnahar Shirin, Rezaul Hasan Koyes Lodi, Syed Ahmed Hossain, Mohiuddin Ahmed Lokman , Syed Misbah Uddin, Rokshana Khatun, Sikondar Ali, Faruque Ahmed, Farhad Chowdhury Shamim, Azizul Haque Manik and Ashique Ahmed. The rest six ward commissioners are either in jail, or absconding or staying abroad.
