Trial of ex-BNP MP Ilyas Ali begins Feb 25
Following a petition filed by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for taking legal action against former BNP lawmaker M Ilyas Ali in a case for killing a leader of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), Chief Judicial Magistrate's Court in Sylhet on Thursday fixed February 25 for hearing.
On December 3 of 2006, JCD leader Foyez Ahmed Anu was shot dead during chase and counter chase between the activists of BNP and its student front JCD, and Awami League (AL) and its student front Bangladesh Chhatra League at Biswanath upazila headquarters.
The same day, BNP leader Siraj Khan filed a case accusing 36 people including upazila Chairman and Awami League leader Muhibur Rahman for the murder. After a long investigation, the investigation officer (IO) recently filed a report acquitting all the accused.
The IO mentioned that the deceased died as his own pistol, which was in his pocket, fired due to callous handling of the arms.
AL leader Muhibur Rahman also filed a complaint on the same day accusing 51 people including M Ilyas Ali, who is also convener of district BNP, for the killing but police did not record it as a case.
After the declaration of emergency, Muhibur filed the same as a case with the Cognizance court No 3 in Sylhet on January 15 last year. First Class Magistrate Raihana Islam conducted a judicial enquiry and suggested recording the same as a case.
Accordingly, CID started investigation into the matter and Inspector Zubayer Ahmed filed a report on Thursday to the Chief Judicial Magistrate's Court pleading for legal actions against Ilyas and 35 others.
