Mohimaganj Sugar Mills stop production
Mohimaganj Sugar Mills in Gaibandha has ceased its production after running for 71 days in this current season while private-owned Nitol Sugar Mills in Kiushoreganj is now operating only one shift a day due to short supply of sugarcane.
Mohimaganj Sugar Mills that went into production on December 7 last year after lay off for three years, produced total 5,300 tonnes of sugar against the target of 5,075 tonnes in this crushing season, consuming 83,412 tonnes of sugar cane against the target 70 thousand tonnes, reports our Gaibandha correspondent.
The mill authorities, however, said the mill could not achieve expected production, even after exceeding crushing target this year.
This season recovery rate of sugar content from cane was assessed at 6.39 percent against the expectation of 7.25, said Shibendra Nath Sarker, managing director of the mill.
This happened due to loss of sugarcane following prolonged inundation of cane fields, he added.
This year the mill will not go in profit, as production cost marked Tk 29 per kg of sugar while the market price has been fixed at Tk 25, mill sources said.
The mill authority has taken a programme for sugarcane cultivation on 11,000 acres of land for the next crushing season.
Our Kishoreganj correspondent adds: Private-owned Nitol Sugar Mills is now operating only one shift a day due to short supply of sugarcane.
Farmers are able to supply only 500 tonnes of sugarcane daily in the ongoing crushing season instead of 12,00 tonnes daily earlier due to massive damage of sugarcane by Sidr, mill sources said.
Sources in mills and Agriculture Extension Department said on average, farmers produced only 10 tonnes of sugarcane on one acre of land instead of 16.5 tonnes earlier.
