Political crisis

Ishtiaque Ahmed, On e-mail
I am a Bangladeshi studying engineering in the United States. Until now, I have always represented my country with pride, but today I have to lower my head in shame due to the state of our nation. Those, whom we had entrusted with keeping the honour of the land of Bangla, have done nothing but injustice to those alive (if we can call it being alive in a country where the price of rice equals a day's worth of work for many) and those who have given their lives for our country. In the name of ridding the country of corruption, the Machiavellian moves of the interim government, and the objectives of the likes of Mannan Bhuiyan, Saifur Rahman and Sheikh Hasina (who would practically sell her soul to the devil if it helped her regain power) plunged Bangladesh into a shameful state of affairs. It's no secret that Bangladesh has always managed to secure a position in the top ten in the list of the most corrupt nations in the world, but to hold people without charge, to deny prisoners proper medical treatment, to delay legal proceedings, and to allow foreign governments to wield influence in the domestic affairs is undemocratic. If anyone has ever wondered why the highly educated do not enter politics, the answer is right in front of our eyes. Political figures like the ones who brought the country to this state of emergency and those who abuse their power now are villainous figures whom I hope no child wishes to emulate. The people of Bangladesh have a duty to assure justice to their brothers and sisters and it is their responsibility to end this situation and assure proper treatment of those who have been denied fair proceedings. Many of you might think that it's easy for me to say these from thousands of miles away, but on a Saturday night at 11:00 pm I certainly have better things to do than write to you knowing that my thoughts will probably be buried with those of hundreds of others before me, but I remain optimistic and will continue to do what I think is right. I urge others to do the same and stand up for what you know is right. For once, don't be driven by power and money, but be driven by the goodness that is innate in all of us. May Allah save us from self destruction.
