Ancient mosque site now a safe haven for criminals
Archaeological Dept authorities urged to protect the place
A historical site of an ancient mosque at a remote village in Tarash upazila is now a safe haven for criminals.
Bhanga Mosque was built at remote Naogaon village in greater Chalan Beel area in the aforesaid upazila during the regime of Nasir Uddin Nasrot Shah, son of Hossain Shah in 1523.
Ultimately, the mosque sunk into the abyss of eternity and ruined. But some of its valuable stones with archeological value and terracotta still remained. But these are also getting damaged due to lack of proper initiatives and maintenance by the authorities concerned.
At present, a powerful syndicate of criminals has taken shelter on the high land and have set up their den in guise of Baul. They have already vitiated the serene atmosphere in the area and engaged in drug trade, statue smuggling and various crimes like gambling, robbery and other anti-social activities, locals alleged. They already stole many valuable stones, touchstone statues and terracotta, locals said.
But the villagers still believe there might have been hidden many valuables under the hilly land. They urged the Archaeological Department authorities to take immediate steps to preserve the area for greater interest of people.
When contacted with Tarash Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Waliur Rahman, he assured necessary steps for preservation of the archeological site in near future.
