Int'l survey on Tipai dam urged
People living around the wetlands of seven districts yesterday reiterated their demand for conducting an international survey of the pros and cons of building the controversial Tipaimukh dam.
“If the dam is constructed, it will have a negative impact on the rivers and haors of seven wetland districts -- Netrokona, Kishoreganj, Sunamganj, Sylhet, Moulovibazar, Habiganj and Brahmanbaria,” they said in a press statement.
“One fifth of the country's total food production comes from haors. So an international survey should be conducted on the possible impacts on haors, rivers, biodiversity and lifestyle in wetlands due to construction of the Tipaimukh dam,” they added.
