Incidents Centering on Limon

NHRC to file writ for judicial probe

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) will file a petition on Sunday with the High Court demanding a judicial probe into the incidents involving Jhalkathi college student Limon Hossain who was maimed by Rab last year. “I believe a judicial probe will find the cases filed against Limon false,” NHRC Chairman Prof Mizanur Rahman told a press conference at its office in the capital yesterday following a meeting of the commission. Once the judicial probe unearths the truth, NHRC would file a compensation case for him, he said, adding that the human rights body was always ready to provide full legal aid to Limon. The decision came when Limon came into limelight again following an attack on Limon, his mother and brother by a Rab source Ibrahim Hawlader in Jhalkathi on August 20 and murder charges were brought against him and his family members. Ibrahim's wife Lily Begum brought the charges on August 21 alleging that Limon and his family members beat her brother, Md Forkan, to death on August 20. It is unclear how Forkan died. During a raid on March 23, 2011, a Rab team shot Limon, then 16, in the left leg. He later got the leg amputated. Following the incident, Rab filed two cases against Limon. Prof Mizanur expressed his frustration that the home ministry had not responded to the commission's request of withdrawing the “apparently false cases” filed by Rab against Limon. Rab's handling of Limon's case has tarnished the force's image, while the state's role on human rights has been questioned, both at home and abroad, he said. He said the shooting of Limon took place due to mistakes which could be corrected in the beginning. “In that case, things would not be complicated.” He feared if justice system of a country was based on lies, people could never get justice.
