Dinajpur Violence
2 orgs demand exemplary punishment for perpetrators
Two organisations working for the rights of minority communities yesterday protested the August 4 violence in Dinajpur and demanded exemplary punishment for the people responsible for it.
During the violence, the attackers injured 50 people and burned and looted 50 houses in Balai Bazar area and adjacent Rajapur village of Chirirbandar upazila.
The violence erupted over an attempt to construct a mosque near a temple in the area.
In a joint statement, the two organisations -- Bangladesh Hindu-Buddha-Christian Oikya Parishad and Bangladesh Puja Udjapan Parishad -- said the attackers were some religious fanatics.
At least 52 families at Kobirajpara, South Abdulpur and Hashimpur villages were rendered homeless due to the assault, they said.
At a press conference in the capital's Jatiya Press Club, the organisations also demanded exemplary punishment for the upazila nirbahi officer and the authorities concerned who, they stated, appeared to be reluctant in addressing the matter.
