No Buet Classes for Third Day
Syndicate for holding admission process soon
The Buet syndicate meeting yesterday suggested the institution's vice-chancellor to hold discussions with deans, directors and provosts to conduct this year's admission test as soon as possible by holding the academic council meeting.
The syndicate urged the agitating teachers, demanding resignation of the VC and his deputy, to return to classes and resume academic activities.
However, no decision over the modalities of resuming classes was taken at the syndicate meeting, called by Vice-Chancellor Prof SM Nazrul Islam.
Yesterday was the third consecutive day with no classes being held at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) while the presence of students was thin on the campus.
Buet opened on Saturday after being shut for 44-days from July 11 for Ramadan and Eid-ul-Fitr.
“I have informed the syndicate about the overall situation of the university and the High Court directive (a July 31 injunction against agitations and strikes over the demand),” Prof Nazrul told The Daily Star.
Meanwhile, Buet Teachers' Association, at a press briefing in the civil engineering building, refuted allegations against two Buet teachers of violating the High Court injunction.
The Buet authorities filed a general diary with police on Saturday night accusing the two teachers of distributed leaflets that day encouraging resumption of agitation.
“The allegations are false and baseless,” said the association General Secretary Prof Ashraful Islam.
Teachers were keen to resume classes but they were “feeling uneasy” about working under the present Buet administration. Moreover there was a low attendance of students, so no classes were held, he added.
Buet Teachers' Association started the agitation demanding the resignation of VC Prof SM Nazrul Islam and Pro-VC Prof M Habibur Rahman on April 7 by refraining from taking classes.
They brought 16 allegations, most notably accusing the duo of giving in to political considerations in the appointment of the pro-VC and deputy registrar and restructuring of the administration.
Terming the allegations baseless, the duo claimed that the teachers were agitating only to claim their posts.
The teachers resumed academic activities on May 5 after the prime minister's assurance to resolve the crisis.
They again started demonstrating on July 10 when the authorities declared the 44-day shutdown and postponed their agitation on August 1 after the HC injunction.
