Contractor Ripon Murder
Arrested youth makes confession
The Detective Branch of police yesterday arrested a youth from Tongi of Gazipur in connection with the murder of a contractor listed with Dhaka Water and Sewerage Authority.
Rafiqul Islam alias Ali Noor, 21, confessed that he killed Ziaul Islam Ripon on Thursday (August 23). Ripon, 42, also an Awami League activist, was found killed in his rented house in the capital's Kathalbagan area Sunday morning.
On information, a team of DB raided Noor's house and arrested him yesterday afternoon, said Monirul Islam, deputy commissioner of DB, at a press briefing at the Media Centre of Dhaka Metropolitan Police in the capital.
At the press briefing, Noor introduced himself as a student of Bachelor of Business Studies (BBS) at Titumir College. He said he had met Ripon six months ago at Mohakhali and they used to drink together.
Noor said at the night of the murder, Ripon and he had taken alcohol in the house of Ripon's friend. Then they had gone to Ripon's place and drank again.
“Ripon was a homosexual. That night, he tried to seduce me in intoxicated condition. Failing to resist him, I hit him with a hammer around 3:00am," said Noor.
Ripon attempted to hit him back, so Noor tied his hands, the arrestee claimed.
"I didn't realise that he would die because of the attack," Noor claimed.
Around two hours later, he left the house taking Ripon's motorcycle and his two mobile phones, locking the door from outside, Noor said.
Police also seized a motorcycle from a garage in Tongi and a mobile set of the murdered contractor from Noor.
