Police foiled a prescheduled agitation programme of medical and dental college admission seekers in Chittagong city yesterday and detained eight youths in this connection. The detainees were Jalal Ahmed, Rizvi, Ashiq Uddin, Dipankar Ghosh, Fakhruddin, Nazim Uddin, Khairul Islam and Masud E Hasan Mamun. Police foiled similar demonstration brought out by the city's admission seekers on Monday. On the other hand, admission seekers in Dhaka continued their demonstration yesterday demanding cancellation of the government's recent decision to enrol students to medical and dental colleges based on their SSC and HSC results rather than through holding admission tests. Meanwhile, Health Minister AFM Ruhal Haque at a roundtable organised by Bangla daily Amader Orthoneeti at its office yesterday said the government's decision might be cancelled after getting the High Court's verdict on it and opinions from all concerned. In the port city, admission seekers gathered in front of Chittagong Central Shaheed Minar around 10:30am to stage their prescheduled demonstration against the government's decision, but police resisted them. Being chased by law enforcers, the protesters took shelter in Tamij Market in the area. The students later dispersed around 1:00pm. Police said they picked up eight youths on suspicion of diverting the agitation into different direction and trying to create commotion. In the capital, admission seekers formed a human chain in front of Jatiya Press Club in the morning to protest the government's decision. Hearing the news of detention of their fellow mates in Chittagong, the students later brought out a protest procession and held a rally in the area demanding immediate release of the detainees. They will hold another sit-in programme around 10:00am today before Raju Memorial Sculpture on Dhaka University.
