Ctg port in clutch of 'mafia group'

Awami League Chittagong city unit President ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury yesterday called for raising a movement to save the Chittagong Port from the clutch of a "mafia group".
Addressing a press conference at Chittagong Press Club, he alleged that several terms and conditions have been changed or relaxed in the original tender documents regarding appointment of private operators in the in New Mooring Container Terminal (NCT) in the port in favour of a particular local firm.
The former mayor of Chittagong City Corporation demanded the Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) to postpone the last date of submitting tender document regarding appointment of the operators scheduled on August 30.
Meanwhile, Central Procurement Technical Unit (CPTU) yesterday issued a notice to the secretary of shipping ministry, CPA chairman and two others to attend a hearing on the tender for the appointment.
The hearing would be held at the conference room of CPTU in Dhaka on September 2, according to the notice signed by M Shamsul Huq, chairperson of Review Panel-3 of CPTU.
Earlier, Jose Manuel M De Jesus, vice-president of International Container Terminal Services, a Manila-based container operator firm which was selected as pre-qualified firm by an evaluation committee on February 12 in 2009 to operate the NCT, submitted a review appeal alleging that there were some irregularities in the tendering process.
Contacted, CPA Secretary Syed Farhad Uddin Ahmed said the CPA cannot change or postpone the date for submission of tender as it was fixed by the ministry.
AL leaders Iftekher Saimul Chowdhury, and MA Rashid, among others, were present at the conference.
