47 land phone lines out of order at ERD

Forty-seven land phone lines have remained out of order for over two months in Economic Relations Division (ERD), affecting the state department's communication with foreign agencies including international donors. Although the ERD sent letters to the Bangladesh Telecommunications Company Limited (BTCL) to reactivate the telephone lines, the state-run telecom firm is yet to take any step to this effect. ERD officials said many donor countries and agencies could not contact them due to the disconnections. “We have informed the BTCL of the problem and also the importance of the division, but no measure is taken to reactivate the telephone lines,” said a senior ERD official.
