A Chittagong court yesterday deferred the cross-examination date of the plaintiff of the Banshkhali carnage case to September 16. The cross-examination of Bimal Kanti Shil, the plaintiff of the case, was not held yesterday since the accused in the case Nurul Islam was absent due to his sister's death, said court sources. The court of Third Additional District and Session Judge (acting) Hosne Ara Begum passed the order yesterday upon request by Nurul's lawyer Advocate Abul Kalam Shamsuddin for deferring the date. Chittagong district Public Prosecutor Abul Hashem told The Daily Star that, “The court deferred the date, rejecting the request of the prosecution lawyer, for around two weeks due to the absence of Nurul Islam who got bail from the High Court.” Earlier on August 22, the court of Fifth Additional District and Session Judge Prashanta Kumar Bishwash deferred the cross-examination date of the Banshkhali carnage case to yesterday due to the leave of judge. Bimal was earlier cross-examined on June 27, July 16 and August 2.He gave his statement before the court on May 15 and 23, and June 3 and 27. On November 18, 2003, a group of attackers set the house of Tejendra Shil at Shilpara in Banshkhali on fire killing 11 members of his family. Tejendra's son Bimal, the lone survivor of the attack, filed a case in this regard.
