5 JCD men get life sentence
Five fugitive Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal activists were sentenced to life in prison by a Sylhet court on Wednesday for killing a Bangladesh Chhatra League man on November 19, 1999.
JCD is a pro-BNP student organisation and BCL is a pro-Awami League student organisation.
The convicts were also fined Tk 50,000 each, in default, to suffer two more years in prison. They are Lakshman Malakar and Kamal Ahmed of Sylhet city's Khuliapara area, Shubhra Bhhattacharya of Sachna in Jamalganj upazila under Sunamganj district and Abdul Wahab Quaiyum and Shoeb Ahmed of the city's Sheikhghat.
The victim, Jhuton Mazumder, was called out from his Mirza Jangal residence in the city and then stabbed and shot dead. His brother Liton Mazumder filed a case with Sylhet Kotwali Police Station the following day accusing 12 people. Police submitted the charge-sheet against six of the accused on May 2, 2000.
The Additional District and Sessions Judge III Manzurul Haque Khan acquitted the sixth accused, Bishnu Pada.
