Padma Bridge
Don't insult people
Matia urges WB
Criticising the World Bank for scrapping its loan deal on Padma Bridge construction, Agriculture Minister Matia Chowdhury yesterday called upon the global lending agency not to insult the people of Bangladesh.
“Don't insult the people of Bangladesh…come up with funding for the Padma Bridge,” she told a discussion at the National Press Club expressing her anger at the WB dilemma over reviving its loan deal.
Matia said construction of the Padma Bridge is their (AL govt) election pledge and the government would implement the project at any cost.
Bangladesh Krishak League arranged the event marking the 37th death anniversary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
The minister said the present government could successfully run the country over the last three and half years.
Matia urged the opposition to come up with the constructive criticism of the government on its activities. “The opposition is our friend…we want their constructive criticism.”
Despite a rise in oil prices in the international market, the government could keep the oil price at tolerable level, Matia said adding, “We could also control the price hike of essentials.”
Food and Disaster Management Minister Abdur Razzaque, AL Organising Secretary AFM Bahauddin Nasim, Privatisation Commission Chairman Dr Mirza Abdul Jalil, also spoke on the occasion. Krishak League President Motaher Hossain Mollah presided over the event.
