Amar Ekushey observedStudents, teachers and guardians of Radiant School & College, one of the leading English-medium educational institutions in the port city, observed Amar Ekushey and International Mother Language Day on Thursday. The programmes included discussion, cultural functions, dance, recitation of poems and painting competition. School Principal AJM Shahidullah chaired the discussion. Associate Editor of Daily Prothom Alo Biswajit Chowdhury, Artist Moududul Alam, Senior Sub Editor of Daily Purbokone Daisy Moudud, Bureau Chief of The Daily Star Shahidul Islam (Bachchu), School Managing Committee Chairman Captain M Zakaria, and Director Syed Asadul Haq spoke at the discussion. An exhibition of paintings of students of nine art schools was held in the port city on Thursday. A total of 700 students of nine schools run by Artist Shawkat Jahan participated in the competition held at St Placid's School Hall to mark the “International Mother Language Day”. The exhibition was held with the selected paintings from the works of the students. The schools are St Placid's High School Special Art Class, Sun Shine Art School, Jamal Khan Sunday Art School, Bandar Karnaphuli Art School, SOS Herman Miner Art Class, Press Club Art School, Naksha Art School and Ghashful Art School. Later, Firingee Bazar Ward Commissioner M Jahirul Alam Dobhas, Patharghata Church Chief Father Philip D Rozario, JM Sen High School Headmaster Mohammad Jahurul Islam and Aujit Kumar Dhar distributed prizes among the winners. Sonali Bank staffs urged to change mindset
Sonali Bank Chief Executive Officer (CEO) SA Chowdhury urged the employees of the bank to change their mindset to compete with the private banks and make the bank a profitable one. He was addressing a divisional business analysis and view exchange meeting on Wednesday of senior officials of the bank at Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industries (CCCI) conference room. General Manager of Sonali Bank central office in Dhaka Mohammad Hanif was the special guest at the meeting with Chittagong Divisional General Manager MA Baten in the chair. SA Chowdhury, Managing Director of the bank, said the largest state-owned commercial bank is going to train up 1,000 staffs with computer literacy to cope with the changing mode of banking in the country. He said there is no more scope of traditional banking now rather they are to come up with innovative thoughts for serving the people with a view to promoting innovative banking.” He pointed out the huge amount of classified loans (CL), the reason behind the loss of the bank. Senior officials, including managers of different branches of the region, were present at the meeting. Trial of war criminals demanded
Teachers of Dhaka and Rajshahi universities, who were released from jail recently, on Friday demanded immediate step to start trial of the war criminal. They said this is the high time for taking initiatives to try the war criminals as people are united in this regard. They were addressing a reception organised by Oikyaboddho Nagarik Manch on the Ekushe Mela premises at DC Hill Park in the port city. Eminent Social Scientist Prof Dr Anupam Sen presided over the function. The teachers are Prof Anwar Hossain of Dhaka University, Prof Moloy Bhowmik and Saidur Rahman Khan of Rajshahi University. Journalist Shariar Kabir, and writer and researcher Muntasir Mamun attended the ceremony. The teachers said people are now united to demand the trial of the war criminals gradually spreading clutches over the state mechanism. They said if the government start the trial of the criminals they will be able to say that the government has done a good job. Former Pro-Vice Chancellor of Chittagong University (CU) Prof Abu Yusuf Alam, Chittagong Union of Journalists' (CUJ) President Shahidul Alam and Chittagong Bar Association General Secretary Mujibur Rahman Faruk also spoke at the reception. Workshop on software ends
A two-day workshop on “Open Source Software” concluded at Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (Cuet) on Saturday. Cuet Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) Department organised the workshop in cooperation with the Bangladesh Open Source Development Network at the department. Chittagong Skill Development Centre sponsored the workshop. Institute of Engineers, Bangladesh, (IEB) Chittagong chapter President M Ali Ashraf was the chief guest in the concluding session with the CSE department Chairman Prof Dr Mohammad Tajul Islam in the chair. Chief guest in his speech said the workshop conducted by the specialist engineers will help the students acquire practical experiences. Thirteen specialists of Open Source Software of different IT Institutions including Cuet trained 40 participants in the workshop. Cuet Teachers' Association General Secretary Mir Muhammad Saki Kawser was present as the special guest in the ceremony. Later, the guests distributed certificates among the participants.
