Whither rule of law?
The government has claimed to have done so many good (or bad) things to put the country on a right (or wrong) track, which, as the government and its backers claim, was severely mishandled by the politicians in the last 36 years. Their initial actions, especially the ones taken to contain corruption and establishment of rule of law received support from general public, non-politicians (!) and even a group of politicians, who claimed themselves to be so-called reformists, but have a long track record of corruption, abuse of power and political cruelty on opposition leaders, workers and supporters.
Then we have seen how the government has shifted its focus from bringing the corrupt people to justice to harassing the political leaders who have been very vocal against the government's wrongdoings. Their actions, particularly against Sheikh Hasina and filing of cases one after another against her and her party leaders, have raised questions as to the government's intentions to carry forward its major (stated) goal of freeing the country from corruption and presenting the country with a free and fair election. It seems that the government, by doing this, has frantically been trying to establish that it is Sheikh Hasina and her party who are the major (or only) players of corruption in Bangladesh and because of them the country could not show any sign of progress in the last 36 years, even though the AL was in power for only eight years, with five years under Sheikh Hasina's leadership. Everybody knows how corruption had spread during the five-year rule of the BNP-Jamaat, and how the country was run by the family of the PM and her son's office, Hawa Bhaban. Instead of taking any firm actions against those, the government has given its leaders a fairly royal treatment with almost no cases being filed against them and many of them are still at large, especially the ones who belong to the Jamaat.
What are we to surmise from all this?
