More Indo-Bangla rail routes mulled
Bangladesh and India have decided to expedite railway connectivity projects on four inter-country routes between the two.
The decision came at the delegation level inter-government railway meeting between the two countries held in New Delhi from Monday till yesterday, said official sources.
The projects will connect Akhaura, Chilahati, Shahbazpur and Birol in Bangladesh with Agartala, Haldibari, Mahishashan and Radhikapur in India respectively.
It also decided to examine the feasibility of establishing a rail link between Feni in Bangladesh and Belonia in India.
Besides, the meeting discussed the ways to enhance the frequency, running and customer satisfaction of Maitree Express.
The Bangladesh delegation was led by Shah Zahirul Islam, additional director general (operation) of Bangladesh Railway, at the meeting while the Indian delegation was led by Devi Prasad Pande, additional member (traffic) of Indian Railway Board.
The delegations decided to examine the feasibility of increasing the frequency of Maitree Express and introducing the system of return tickets.
A working group was formed at the meeting to examine feasibility on the total range of issues.
