Country needs strong EC not caretaker govt
Says Suranjit
Instead of arguing about the reinstatement of caretaker government, focus should be given to create a strong election commission for a free, fair and transparent election, said minister without portfolio Suranjit Sengupta yesterday.
"The caretaker government is unconstitutional and countries all over the world hold their elections under an election commission. Thus, it is of utmost importance to establish an election commission that is only answerable to the people of the country," he said.
Instead of creating "drama", BNP should attend parliamentary meeting to place their allegations, demands and complaints, Suranjit said.
"We will not censor their words and so they can easily make their claims in the parliamentary session instead of calling unnecessary protest movements and hartals," he said.
He made the remarks at a discussion and cultural programme celebrating successful four years reign of the Awami League government organised by the Shahbag unit of Bangabandhu Shangskritik Jote.
Speakers a the event said despite all the obstacles created by the opposition party, the country has advanced a great deal in the past four years and will continue to do so.
