The Chittagong-12 (Anwara-Paschim Patiya) by-election will be held amid tight security today as more than three thousand law enforcers are set to guard the 90 polling centres in the constituency. The voting will be underway from 8:00am to 4:00pm without any break across 11 unions of Anwara upazila and five unions of Patiya upazila. Only two candidates--Awami League nominated Saifuzzaman Chowdhury Javed and Gonoforum candidate Ujjal Bhowmik--are contesting the by-poll, both confident about their victory. Ujjal, who is the headmaster of Saint Martin Navy High School, said he would win if the election was held in an impartial manner. On the other hand, Javed, an ex-president of Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry, believed that everyone was eagerly waiting to vote for him. The constituency has a total of 2,50,257 voters with 1,26,293 males and 1,23,964 females. A total of 3,300 personnel from police, Rapid Action Battalion (Rab), Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), and Coast Guard have been deployed in the polling areas, while there will be 52 strike forces in place and 27 police and Ansar personnel will guard each centre. The parliamentary seat fell vacant following the death of Javed's father Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Babu, an AL lawmaker, on November 4, 2012.
