MPO seekers threaten to shut institutions
The agitating teachers and employees of non-MPO educational institutions yesterday threatened to shut their institutions if their demands are not met by January 22.
At a press conference organised by Non-MPO Shikkha Pratishthan Shikkhak Karmachari Oikya Jote at Dhaka Reporters Unity, they said they will not leave the capital until the government meets their demand.
According to the jote leaders, over 100,000 teachers and employees of around 7,000 non-government secondary schools, colleges, madrasas and technical educational institutions have been deprived of MPO facilities for long.
Under the banner of the jote, the teachers and employees have been agitating since January 7 to press home their demand to include their institutions in the monthly payment order (MPO) list.
The jote President Esharat Ali said they will submit a memorandum to the speaker of the national parliament after staging a demonstration at Suhrawardy Uddyan today.
He, however, said they only want a speech from Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina about their demands.
"If any negative thing about our demands comes from the premier, we will shut our institutions next day," he said.
"We had received a letter [from the prime minister's office] which read the prime minister would sit with us on December 11," he said, adding, "The meeting was postponed for an unknown reason. We hope she will sit with us this time."
Meanwhile, Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK), a rights organisation, in a statement yesterday condemned and protested government's firm position to control the teachers' movement.
