Victim families to get 'highest' compensation
Says Bahrain team, assures of punishment
A visiting Bahrain parliamentary delegation yesterday said they would recommend Bahrain's King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa to provide maximum compensation to 13 Bangladeshi labourers who died in an inferno in the country's capital Manama.
On January 11, 13 Bangladeshi were burned to death in the devastating fire that broke out in a labour camp.
The assurance came following a meeting of the Bangladesh-Bahrain parliamentary group consisting of lawmakers of the two countries at Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban.
“The delegation expressed their deep sympathy at the death of Bangladeshis in their country,†AKM Mayeedul Islam, a member of Bangladesh-Bahrain parliamentary group, told this correspondent after the meeting.
“They assured that they would request their Badsha (King Hamad) to give the highest amount of compensation to the deceased family members.
“Led by Mahmoud Youssef Almahmoud, the Bahrain delegation informed us that their government has formed a high-powered investigation team to find out reasons and persons responsible for the deadly inferno.
“They said, on investigation, their government was determined to give exemplary punishment to the culprits,†added Mayeedul, also a Jatiya Party lawmaker.
The delegation also assured that they will recommend their government to set up an embassy in Dhaka to develop diplomatic relations and cater to issues of mutual interest between the two countries, he said.
Awami League lawmaker RAM Obaidul Moktadir Chowdhury, chief of the Bangladesh-Bahrain parliamentary group, requested the Bahrain delegation to increase their imports, especially food, garment items and condensed milk, from Bangladesh.
